The Mazda3 Axela is a New Car that embodies the "KODO" design philosophy in its lines. With a length of 4662mm and a wheelbase of 2726mm, it's longer than its predecessor, boasting a drag coefficient as low as 0.27. The large honeycomb grille paired with slender LED headlights gives the front an aggressive look, while the short and compact rear end adds to its overall agility. Its proportions are more dynamic than a used Civic and more refined than a boxy commercial minivan, allowing for easy U-turns in parking garages.
The interior is thoroughly driver-oriented, featuring soft-touch materials and leather upholstery. An 8.8-inch standard central touchscreen, three-dial instrument cluster, and seven airbags are standard across the range. While the infotainment system isn't flashy, the GVC (G-Vectoring Control) system and 50:50 weight distribution make cornering smoother. Rear passengers have ample legroom (about a fist and two fingers) and headroom (about three fingers). The central floor hump makes it slightly cramped for three people laterally, but the seats provide good support, offering a more engaging "Jinba Ittai" (horse and rider as one) experience on long journeys compared to other new energy vehicles in the same price range.
The powertrain continues to offer 1.5L and 2.0L Skyactiv-G naturally aspirated engines: the 2.0L version delivers 158 hp/202 N·m of torque paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission, offering linear throttle response and responsive revving. At highway cruising speeds below 2000 rpm, it achieves a WLTC fuel consumption of 5.8-6.2L/100km, requiring only 92-octane gasoline. The chassis features a MacPherson strut front suspension and a torsion beam rear suspension with highly resilient springs, allowing for quick recovery after over speed bumps. Steering is quick and provides clear road feedback, offering more mechanical communication than pure electric new energy vehicles and less lag than turbocharged cars.
The annual maintenance cost is approximately 11,000 RMB, less hassle than an older turbocharged Used Car and half the cost of similarly sized new energy vehicles. Compared to commercial MPVs, it has a shorter body and is easier to park; compared to older used models, the new car has LED headlights and GVC vector control; compared to electric vehicles that require finding charging stations on the streets, it can travel 1,000km on a single tank of gas, making it suitable for city commuting and weekend mountain driving, turning "naturally aspirated + AT" into a subtle kind of romance.
